Ondo presents Preludio, a dialogue between the sculptural work of Lupo Borgonovo (OYO) and a live performance by MMMM – Memorie Marine Music Manifesto. The project opens the gallery’s new exhibition programme, dedicated to research and interdisciplinarity in contemporary artistic practices. Installed in the gallery’s outdoor courtyard, the work will be on view from September 26th to November 15th, 2026.
The title of the project reflects its nature: in music, as in other fields, a prelude is an introduction to something that has yet to begin. Preludio therefore marks the beginning of Ondo’s new programme, paving the way for the reopening of its indoor exhibition space. The courtyard, in turns, becomes a threshold and a diaphragm between the public and exhibition spaces — a place where Borgonovo’s bronze sculpture and MMMM’s musical performance come together.
This state of suspension is embodied by the owl, the subject of the bronze work (OYO). The owl is the quintessential nocturnal animal and appears between day and night, at twilight. This sense of anticipation also connects the sculpture to the musical prelude. Against this backdrop, MMMM’s performance engages with the sculpture, giving the courtyard a new function as a space for listening through a piece specifically composed for the occasion.
Lupo Borgonovo’s practice often begins with encounters with natural elements or objects he comes across, whose forms hold the potential for transformation. He observes and interprets them, allowing their shapes to suggest new images. In this process, an object can leave behind its original function and context and take on a new image, somewhere between artefact and symbol. This is what happened with a coconut that Borgonovo received in an exchange with a dealer in mirabilia. Looking at its shape, he saw the face of an owl with a frowning expression and bright yellow eyes.
A shared interest in timeless forms connects Milan-based artist’s research with that of Alberto Morelli and Lorenzo Saini. The two MMMM musicians bring together ancestral instruments and artefacts from ancient and folk cultures with electronic sounds and contemporary frequencies. The piece created for the opening developed through an open exchange between the artist and the musicians. A pre-recorded structure provides its starting point, while live improvisation allows the music to change in the moment.
